British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab spoke at the 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council. On its agenda were China’s systematic human rights violations against the Uighur Turks and other minorities in Xinjiang. “The situation in Xinjiang is unacceptable,” said Raab, regarding the violations. He stressed that the reported abuses, including torture, forced labor and forced sterilization of women, were extreme and extensive.
The British Minister pointed out that the violations took place on an “industrial scale” and said, “It should be our common duty to ensure that these are not unrequited. UN mechanisms must respond.”
“A DECISION SECURING ACCESS MUST BE TAKEN”
Raab highlighted the need to give immediate and unlimited access to Xinjiang to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights or another independent expert. “If we are to fulfill our responsibilities as members of the Human Rights Council, a decision must be taken to guarantee this access,” he said.
While demanding the release of political leaders arrested after the coup phase in Myanmar, the British Foreign Minister urged Russia to count on human rights, including freedom of expression.
