With the acceleration of sea transfers all over the world, it has become easier to move plants, animals and other micro organisms from one place to another. With the effects of climate change, the spread areas of invasive alien species have increased very rapidly in the last 10-20 years.
The invasion of puffer fish, lionfish and other alien species also harms the Mediterranean. Çukurova University, Faculty of Fisheries, Department of Marine Biology. Dr. Cem Çevik made a statement to the İHA reporter.
“THE MEDITERRANEAN IS IN OCCUPATION OF TROPIC SPECIES”
Stating that alien species came to the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal with global warming, Çevik said, “We see more extraordinary effects of global warming. Especially the place where our region is located is known as the Levantine Sea. There are many alien species and most of them come from the Suez canal. It comes from tropical places. This place is actually occupied by tropical species. The number of alien species has reached approximately 600. This is what we know. There are also species that we do not know about at the micro level. The number is huge with them. The rise in temperature in this region is one of the reasons for this, ”he said.
“THE MEDITERRANEAN IS INTO THE TROPICIZATION PROCESS”
Noting that some scientists said that “biodiversity may collapse” due to alien species, Prof. Dr. Cem Çevik continued as follows:
“There are puffer fish, lion fish, fish, red mullet, and 2 of them are actually foreign species. There has been an abnormal increase in the number of species entering the Mediterranean in the last decades. This is an indication that this region may have entered a slow tropicalization process. The consequences of this can be devastating. In some studies, it is said that the arrival of alien species contributes. Some scientists also say it’s nothing to be afraid of. Some scientists say this could have serious consequences and that biodiversity could collapse. Therefore, very interesting studies are carried out and we follow it. Don’t just think of it as a fish. It is a question of many species of creatures such as shrimp, mussels and sea worms coming and settling here. ”
Çukurova University, Faculty of Fisheries, Department of Marine Biology, Professor. Dr. Cem Çevik added that special training programs should be prepared for fishermen in the region.
Last week, ‘corrugated whale’ and ‘moonfish’, which are rarely seen in the Mediterranean, were seen off the Karataş district of Adana.
