David Martill, a paleontologist at the University of Portsmouth, was asked to identify a large bone that was purchased by a private collector and thought to be part of a ‘flying predatory reptile skull’. Martill determined that the bone belonged to a large fish. “Only an animal has such a structure and it is a Coelacanth. We found a piece of the bone cage that contained the liver of this extraordinary and bizarre looking fish,” Martill said in a statement.
4.88 METERS LENGTH
This particular fish was enormous. Possibly the largest coelacanth ever discovered, ”Martill said. Archaeologists have determined that the fish fossil is 4.88 meters long in their research based on the fossil bone.
WHAT IS COELACANTHS?
Coelacanths is a rare fish breed from the genus Latimeria that lives in deep waters and includes two existing species. The coelacanth first appeared 400 million years ago (200 million years before the first dinosaurs). Towards the end of the Mesozoic era, this genus was believed to have disappeared, but in 1938 a coelacanth living off the coast of South Africa was found.
