Taiwanese officials stated that it was understood that the Philippines-origin migrant worker who went to Taiwan from China’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region was accidentally abducted during the 14-day quarantine period.
The officials investigating the allegations that the immigrant worker, whose surname is said to be Chen, was abducted, concluded that Chen “did not violate the quarantine rules by request or as a result of negligence” and reported that the fine imposed on him was canceled. The officials pointed out that according to the law, people will not be punished in such incidents, and the people who kidnapped Chen were searched.
The report in the Guardian newspaper, based on the statements of the authorities, also stated that Chen, who was thought to have violated the quarantine, was accidentally kidnapped and attacked by the people his friend owed. Chen was the first case of quarantine fines canceled in Taiwan.
QUARANTINE MONITORING IS DONE WITH ELECTRONIC PHONE SIGNALS IN TAIWAN
Chen, of Philippine origin, went into a 14-day quarantine at a friend’s home in Nantou city on his return from Hong Kong to Taiwan in late October 2020.
Local public health officials sentenced Chen to $ 3,500 (approximately 100,000 Taiwan dollars) on November 1, 2020 for reporting that he had violated the quarantine, but the matter was taken to the judicial authorities to investigate Chen’s allegations of the escape.
Taiwan’s quarantine system is monitored via electronic phone signals. By law, anyone coming to Taiwan from outside the Island must remain in quarantine for 14 days.
