Major Mahmud al-Werfalli, who is affiliated with the putschist General Haftar and wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes, was assassinated near the Arab Medical University in Benghazi, Libya. It was reported that there was an armed assassination while in the vehicle with Werfalli’s two bodyguards. Werfalli was known to be the commander of an elite unit in the Libyan National Army (LNA) affiliated to Haftar.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands, issued an arrest warrant for Werfalli for killing more than 40 people, including an incident in 2018 where photos showing him executing 10 detainees.
In December 2019, the US Treasury Department and in September 2020 the European Union (EU) put Werfalli on the sanctions list.
